PB Debut Troupe 21 is delighted to share the first cover released by a member of our group! Stylish, warm and simply gorgeous, the cover of YOUR MAMA (HMH/Versify, April 6, 2021) captures the heart and spirit of the debut picture book by Troupe member NoNieqa Ramos. YOUR MAMA is illustrated by Jacqueline Alacántara.

My single father would start Friday’s house party preparation with a stabbing of meat, a dousing of Adobo, a slathering of marinades, a housing of onions (my father pronounced unjuns) and seasoned chops and chicken in tents of foil. Z100 sountracked the entrance of titis and primas with the freestyle music of Judy Torres, Stevie B, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. At nightfall, we’d pile in la sala and watch Friday night videos or stand up comedy. Saturday nights we’d watch Saturday Night Live or maybe a movie with Eddie Murphy or Richard Pryor. Love flowed sweet as the Kool-Aid that stained paper cups, bright as it painted our lips. Familia, musica, comedia went hand-in-hand..
Sunday would end with my single-father getting ready for a two or three shift at the hospital. My dad was my mom. My titis, many of whom were single parents, were my fleet of madres. I wrote YOUR MAMA to shout out single moms and single parents and to embody the spirit and essence of parenting that honored my Latinx and Bronx upbringing. Jacqueline Alcántara captured the attitude and the verve con mucho mucho amor, and I can’t wait to start celebrating all the kiddos with single parents out there when the book launches April 6, 2021!
